"To hold,
as 'twere, the mirror up to nature."
Shakespeare
Francis Bacon was involved with building in the human mind
a replica of the great globe-the earth itself. He was intent
on holding the mirror up to nature, and the mirror he held
up to nature was the human mind. Bacon wrote :
"God hath framed the mind of man as a glass capable
of the image of the universal world, joying to receive
the signature thereof as the eye is of light."
Bacon's mirror was a crystalline globe, and Bacon called
his model of the world-The Intellectual Globe.
